Abstract Until recently, many methods using various approaches in determining the ranking of fuzzy numbers have been introduced. However, some ranking methods cannot discriminate fuzzy numbers effectively. In this paper, we propose a method of ranking fuzzy numbers using distance-based approach involving horizontal x value, centroid point value, similarity measure, height and spread of fuzzy numbers. The proposed ranking method is applied to several benchmarking sets of fuzzy numbers for comparison. Our method can solve some combinations of fuzzy numbers that cannot be appropriately ranked by other methods.
