Abstract | Idioms, frequently used in daily language, are a typical metaphorical language and may be a cue to uncover the universal language processing mechanism. For the purpose of better mastery of the trends and front of idioms studies, CiteSpace II, an application designed to detect and visualize the development process within a scientific field, is adopted for comprehensive literature review. It is found that (1) idioms studies have thrived since 1990s with American scholars contributing the most, especially those from University of California; (2) suppositions on idiom comprehension mechanism have been inspired by different scholars including Lakoff, Swinney and Gibbs; (3) the exploration of the neurological bases for idiom comprehension has become the pursuit of researchers across different domains. |
