Abstract | Cerebrovascular disease is the second most common cause of death and leading cause of acquired disability. The approach to management has in general been nihilistic. Most patients are offered supportive care and despite evidence for the efficacy of excellent therapies that can significantly improve outcomes, very few individuals actually benefit from such advances. This review highlights some of the recent advances in the management of acute ischemic stroke. We also present evidence for optical supportive care that should be offered to all patients who suffer from this devastating disease. This article may be cited as: Shuaib A, Khan K.
