Abstract | The version of Iphigenia´s sacrifice presented in Euripides´s Iphigenia in Tauris (the sacrifice as consequence of Agamemnon´s vow to offer to Artemis the most beautiful product of the year) is unique in the tradition of the myth. In this paper I aim at showing that this new version can be read in the light of the double ritual pattern of the proteleia and the first fruits´s offerings. These two rituals are in accordance with the dramatic function that Euripides assigns to the heroin in the plot, and with her ritual function in the brauronian cult evoked in the etiological conclusion of the play. |
