Abstract | Volume XI of The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola by Janez Vajkard Valvasor presents a complete picture of the countrys cultural heritage – knowledge of which is a necessary condition for building collective identity. The complexity of towns gives them special status as receptacles of knowledge of the cultural heritage of a particular area. By establishing the relations between towns and their respective relations to the country, Valvasors perception of space proves to be topological. Towns are described according to a more or less established scheme of perception. Valvasors plain description of space as such is connected to historical data or events, which imports the aspect of time into the image of an area. This work is based on the spatial principle, with the dimension of time included. As a rule, towns are described from the perspective of an outside observer, while the capital is presented from the so-called insiders perspective. The numerous copper engravings added to the work represent a substantial contribution to the reputation of Carniola. As visual elements, cityscapes can serve as significant supplements to the text, or may even replace it. |
