Abstract IITA 2008 has been held in Shanghai, China, December 2008. 2008 International Symposium on Intelligent Information Technology Application (IITA 2008) was the second symposium in the annual series that started in Zhang Jiajie, China, during December 2–3, 2007. IITA 2008 provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, university and industry to present their latest research findings in any aspects of intelligent information technology. In 2008, we especially encouraged papers on machine learning; signal Processing, communication Systems, circuits and Systems etc. We also welcome papers that highlight successful modern applications of Intelligent Information Technology, such as Multimedia, Bioinformatics, Power, Neural Systems, Control and so on .We were are soliciting papers that present recent results, as well as more speculative presentations that discuss research challenges, define new applications, propose methodologies for evaluating and the roadmap for achieving the vision of information technology. 2008 International Symposium on Intelligent Information Technology Application is co-sponsored by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, Intelligent Information Technology Application Association, Hong Kong. Much work went into preparing a program of high quality. We received about 2400 submissions. Every paper was reviewed by 3 program committee members, about 600 were selected as regular papers, representing a 25% acceptance rate for regular papers. Out of more than 400 papers submitted to IITA, we have chosen 15 outstanding papers to be published in this special issue, track on Multimedia Information Processing. All these papers have been reviewed in the second round and were recommended to contain 30% more new material to be accepted and published in this Special Issue. To have a quick look at some papers in this special issue, in the first paper, Hongwei Fu et al design an acyclic lateral inhibition network model based on biology vision information processing mechanism, and an algorithm of image edge detection based on this model was also established, experiments prove that proposed model can preserve the farthest object detail information. Bin Luo et. al proposed a novel watermarking sharing system, the feature of the proposed system is sharing a secret of gray-level image among multi-users, and its application is ownership verification. Qiu-yu Zhang et. al proposed a two dimensional skin color probability forecast method, then extended a hand gesture segmentation method of multi-mode and a hand gesture tracking method of state estimation. Gang LI et. al provide an algorithm to locate vehicle license plate in complex scene by means of plate’s character edge color multi-component information. Next, Qiaorong Zhang et. al proposed a new approach for image segmentation based on visual attention mechanism, this approach simulates the bottom-up human visual selective attention mechanism, extracts early vision features of the image and constructs the saliency map. Askar Hamdulla et. al present a particle filter based real-time target tracking algorithm, then use the data fusion to divide the measurements in the overlapped parts of windows, and simulate the proposed tracking algorithm on the MATLAB platform. Jing. Zhang et. al propose a new approach to detect tampered images based on double JPEG 2000 compression to verify the authenticity and integrity of digital images. Xinsheng Zhang proposed a novel algorithm for mammographic images enhancement and denoising based on Multiscale Geometric Analysis. Weize Zhang et. al extend Viola and Jones’s detection framework in two aspects, and present boosting 2-Thresholded weak classifiers over scattered rectangle features for object detection, experiments show that the extended method outperforms the original one. Mao-Quan Li et. al present a robust video coding scheme to recover the lost information corrupted by burst errors, the proposed scheme can recover up to three to four successive lost frames to acceptable quality. Huijian Han et.al proposes an image-based method that requires basic texture map and coefficient maps to interpolate light effective, the method can reconstruct the surface color under varying lighting conditions and represent the variation in surface color for each texel independently. Zhao Jingxiu proposes a novel method for edge detection based on gradient extreme value of the local region. Jinyong Cheng et. al give an improved medical image segmentation method suitable for 3-D reconstruction using wavelet transform and snake model. Jie Chen et al compared SUSAN and Harris corner detection algorithms in stability, noise immunity and complexity, and concluded that Harris corner detection algorithm was superior to SUSAN corner detection algorithm on the whole. Guangmin Sun et. al present the algorithms to locate license plate and recognize the characters based on artificial neural network under complex backgrounds. We hope that the readers of this Special Issue enjoy reading and finding it useful in their future research. We first would like to thank the authors who worked hard to add substantial materials to the conference versions. Also, we would like to thank the Editorial Board of the Journal of Multimedia for the helpful instructions and guidance.
