Abstract	ここ数年, 私はホスピスの音楽療法士として、死に近い患者さん達の話を聞いてきた。病気と共に生きていく事に疲れた患者さんは、「もう死にたい」と言う。人は自分の致命を誰よりも良く分かっているから、患者さんの言葉が「もう死にたい」から「もう死にます」に変わった時、私は彼らが死に近いことを悟る。そういった患者さんは大抵２，３日中に亡くなる。どうしてだかはわからないが、認知的な能力が弱まった患者さんでさえ、自分の死を察するようだ。この「死が近づく認識」というものを最初に教えてくれたのは、インターン時代に出会ったハーブという患者さんだった。
